When Isaac Singer invented his first sewing machine in Boston in 1850, little did he foresee the range of home machines available today. Model 2517 is a good basic machine for novices or the infrequent sewer. Traditionally rectangular in form, the free-arm machine offers 17 stitch functions and comes with a plastic feed cover to keep fabric stationary for darning or embroidery. Other features include stitch width and length selectors, push-button reverse, and four zigzag selections, including extra-wide (6 millimeters), three-position buttonhole system, top drop-in bobbin, easy threading system, and three-position needle selector. In addition to the feed cover, accessories for this model include three transparent bobbins, a five-needle pack, and two spool holders to adapt different sized spools of thread to the horizontal feed. All can be handily stored in the included accessory box. Illustrated with black-and-white drawings, the owner’s manual is written in English, Spanish, and French. Measuring 15-1/2 by 11-1/2 by 7 inches, the 2517 comes with a light and a convenient carry handle. Singer covers the sewing machine with a graduated warranty: 90-day adjustment and limited parts, two-year electrical and 25-year mechanical.
